Tips for a good life for your rabbit.

The needs and behavior of rabbits are the same in domesticated rabbits as in rabbits in their natural environment. It is therefore important that the way you care for your rabbit reflects the rabbits natural instincts as prey rather than predators like our cats and dogs.  A rabbit’s anatomy and senses are designed to constantly check for danger and their hind legs are designed to quickly get to a safe place to hide.

Rabbit’s diet and needs

In order for your rabbit to have an optimal environment at home, it is good to have a covered space in which they can hide and feel safe if needed. Rabbits’ needs and diet are also very similar to wild rabbits. They must have constant access to unlimited amounts of fresh hay and/or grass to eat. They should also have a carefully measured portion of good rabbit food, half the portion in the morning and half in the evening. Choose a food specially designed for rabbits and their need for high fiber content, preferably a variety without added sugars. Feel free to add a handful of fresh green vegetables for good variety and to get more fiber into your rabbit’s diet.

It is important for rabbits to have a balanced diet high in fiber to keep their stomachs healthy and to encourage chewing, and keep their constantly growing teeth in good shape. Rabbits need a constant supply of as much fresh hay as they can chew and hay should make up at least 80% of their daily diet.

This keeps the rabbits food bowl fresh

A good tip to keep the food dry and fresh is to use a heavy bowl, for example a ceramic bowl, to prevent the rabbit tipping the food out of the bowl. Also remember that the food bowl must be cleaned every day. It is also extremely important that your rabbits get exercise every day to keep their bones and muscles healthy and of course also for your rabbit to feel good mentally.
